NORWICH - Anthony Louis Gomes, 82, entered the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 25th at Backus Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in New Bedford, MA to the late Louis and Antonia (Ramos) Gomes on July 21, 1935. He served his country in the USAF until the time of his Honorable Discharge.

Anthony, also called "Cookie", Tony, "Coach" and Papa, married his soul mate, Judith Gonsalves on May 13, 1961 at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich, CT. She survives him.

He was born in New Bedford, MA to the late Louis and Antonia (Ramos) Gomes on July 21, 1935. He served his country in the USAF until the time of his Honorable Discharge.

Anthony, also called "Cookie", Tony, "Coach" and Papa, married his soul mate, Judith Gonsalves on May 13, 1961 at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich, CT. She survives him.

Tony was first and foremost a family man but with love and enthusiasm to spare, he coached both boys and girl's little league teams and Norwich Recreation Basketball for many years. He provided each child with the fundamentals on which to build their skills and was proud of each of them. He shared his prowess as an athlete in his younger years sharing experience for learning.

Tony worked first as a welder, then a Foreman for Pratt & Whitney for 33 years until his retirement. While enjoying family was his first priority, the game of golf ran a close second. He was a member of the 918 Golf League, the Tuesday Norwich Golf League, the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame, The Massachusetts Vocational Tech Sports Hall of Fame, and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal in the Air Force.

He is survived by his wife Judith, 5 children, Laurie Gomes, Lee-Ann Gomes, James Gomes, Tracey Gomes-Johnson and Anthony Gomes, 4 children by marriage; Curt Simmons, Jackie Gomes, Chris Johnson and Nicole Gomes, 11 grandchildren; Ashlyn, Ajai, Alec Gomes, Kayla, Chris Johnson, Kendall, Bryce Simmons, Jordan, Noah, Ally Gomes and Michael Gomes, 4 brothers; Louis (Brenda) Gomes, Robert (Pat) Gomes, Phillip (Pranee) Gomes, Michael (Vangi) Gomes, 3 sisters; Barbara Andrade, Evelyn Glass, and Phyllis Corchado along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, James Gomes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 31st at The Cathedral of St. Patrick located at 213 Broadway, Norwich, CT at 10:00am. Military Honors will follow. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Visitation/Calling Hours will be held from 8:30am to 9:45am prior to the Mass at Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, CT.
